Shigatoxin producing Escherichia coli in dairy cattle in Northern Germany: prevalence and influences on shedding patterns

چکیده
The relevance of Shigatoxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is justified by the caused serious diseases in combination with a low infectious dose. This study aimed for the identification and evaluation of risk factors in fecal shedding of STEC in dairy cows. The longitudinal design of the study permitted to follow the STEC-shedding of selected cows over the period of twelve months. Overall, 24.7% (407) of 1,646 fecal samples were positive for STEC by PCR. The inner herd prevalence varied from 11.1% to 32.3%. The month of sampling, the number of lactations and days in milk, the nutritional condition, the somatic cell count, the content of protein in milk and the presence of a continuously positive cow in the herd were identified to have a significant influence on shedding of STEC. As already confirmed for the serogroup O157, first calvers, cows in early lactation and dry cows also formed a group of higher risk for the other STECserogroups. The late summer months (August, September, and October) were analyzed as season with higher prevalences. Isolated bovine STEC mainly possessed the genes for stx2 and EHEC-hlyA (434 isolates, 39.3%), and stx1, stx2 and EHEC-hlyA (311 isolates, 28.1%), which represent potentially pathogenic virulence profiles for humans.

Prevalence and molecular characterization of verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 in cattle and sheep in Shiraz-Iran
Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli have been associated with HUS, HC and TTP in human. We found recto-anal mucosal sample in sheep as well in cattle is the main site for E. coli O157 localization. 1246 E. coli isolates from 872 both healthy and diarrheic animals were analyzed, by screening for the presence of Shiga toxin-producing (VT 1 and VT 2) and intimin (eae) genes used Multiplex PCR. ...
متن کاملPrevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli on Bavarian dairy and beef cattle farms.
Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli strains are believed to be widely distributed among humans and animals; however, to date, there are only few studies that support this assumption on a regional or countrywide scale. Therefore, a study was designed to assess the prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli in dairy cows and beef cattle in the southern part of Bavaria, Germa...

To identify the reservoirs of shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157, sensitive detection andisolation methods are necessary. The sensitivity of traditional culture methods can be improved significantlyby the inclusion of an immunoconcentration step, resulting in less false-negative results. In this study, enrichment procedure and immunomagnetic separation (IMS) were compared for use in con...

Today, it is nearly 25 years past from investigation of Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) which is able to produce Shiga toxins and cause different gastroenteritis. Since incidence of gastroenteritis due to STEC is increasing, it's necessary to develop rapid, specific and accurate procedures like PCR. In this study, we used PCR method to detect and identify STEC in cultures of 55 Escher...

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of vitamin D on fecal shedding of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in cattle. In the first experiment, two groups of cattle (beef and dairy) were assigned to a control treatment or to receive 0.5 × 10(6) IU vitamin D per day via oral bolus for 10 days. Fecal samples were collected before and throughout the dosing period for culture of E. coli ...
